Here we have a mild steel cover plate, which we supply to a customer on an annual basis.

How to spin a mild steel cover plate takes different manufacturing stages.

This part is manufactured from a 5.0mm mild steel plate and a 33mm dia. mild steel plate.

The following process involved in this part is metal spinning, welding, machining and metal treatment.

Step 1 – Lasering blank

The first stage of the process is to get the 370 dia. blanks lasered in 5.0mm m.st.

Each blank has an 8mm ctr. hole, which allows the blank to be centralised and held in place on the tool during the spinning process.

Step 2- Metal Spinning

Once the blanks have been lasered, the next stage of the manufacturing process is to spin.

Due to the thickness of material and form of the part, the semi-automatic hydraulic spinning lathe was the most effective manufacturing process.

How the mild steel cover plate is spun is by applying pressure through the wheels against the material and gradually forming the shape.

To control the amount of pressure and location of the wheels, the spinning operative used hand controls to change the direction of the wheel.

This process requires excellent hand-eye coordination and our skilled metal spinners make this process look very simple due to their years of experience in this process.

Step 3 – Machining

This particular part requires a tube to be welded to the spinning.

A section of pipe is cut to length by a sheet metal operative and then a hole is drilled into the side.

Step 4 – Welding

After the machining is complete, the tube section is then welded to the spinning.

Step 5 – Metal Treatment

The final stage in the manufacturing process is to get the parts zinc plated.

This is completed by a local metal treatment sub-contractor.

We place great emphasis on supporting local business and will always strive to use a local contractor, which not only supports business in the community but helps to reduce our carbo footprint by going to a large national supplier.
